Health Matters: Varicose veins: A closer look at a common condition

Varicose veins – the enlarged and often unsightly veins that frequently appear on our legs – are a prevalent concern affecting many individuals.

While they may seem like a cosmetic issue, varicose veins can sometimes signal underlying health problems.

To shed light on this common condition, GDN spoke with American Mission Hospital (AMH) vascular medicine consultant Dr Khanimana Maresch.

She explained that varicose veins develop when the tiny valves within the veins malfunction, leading to blood pooling and vein distension.

“Several factors can contribute to their development,” said Dr Maresch, “including age, genetics, gender, obesity, and prolonged standing or sitting.”

Women, in particular, are more prone to varicose veins, potentially due to hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy and menopause.

The symptoms can range from visible veins and mild discomfort to pain, swelling, and skin changes. While not always a cause for alarm, it’s crucial to seek medical attention if the symptoms worsen or if complications arise.

Dr Maresch emphasised that early intervention can help manage the condition and prevent it from progressing.

Fortunately, numerous treatment options are available for varicose veins. She highlighted lifestyle modifications as a first step, including maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Compression stockings can also provide relief by improving blood flow and reducing swelling.

For more severe cases, minimally invasive procedures like sclerotherapy and endovenous ablation offer effective solutions.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the veins, causing them to shrink and fade, while endovenous ablation uses heat or radiofrequency energy to close off the affected veins. In rare instances, surgery may be necessary to remove the varicose veins.

According to Dr Maresch, most cases of varicose veins can be effectively managed with proper care and treatment.

“It’s essential to consult a vascular specialist to determine the most suitable treatment plan based on individual needs and preferences,” she said.

While varicose veins may be primarily a cosmetic concern for some, they can also indicate underlying health issues. If you’re experiencing symptoms of varicose veins, don’t hesitate to seek professional medical advice.

With various treatment options available, you can effectively manage the condition and improve your overall well-being.
