Alba, the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter, has become the first company to join the Open Innovation Programme.
This initiative, supported by the Labour Fund (Tamkeen) and managed by Brinc Mena, connects leading enterprises with innovative Bahraini startups and SMEs.
The programme fosters collaboration to develop cutting-edge solutions that address industry challenges, enhance operational efficiency, and promote sustainability. This aligns perfectly with Alba’s commitment to economic growth and nurturing Bahrain’s vibrant startup ecosystem.
The agreement signing ceremony, held at Tamkeen headquarters, saw participation from key figures: Tamkeen chief executive Maha Mofeez, Alba chief executive Ali Al Baqali, and Brinc MENA managing director Husain Haji.
Under the programme, Alba will collaborate with selected startups and SMEs, co-funding the development of innovative solutions. This fosters a win-win situation, with Alba gaining access to cutting-edge solutions and startups receiving valuable support to bring their ideas to life.
This also aligns with Tamkeen’s strategic priorities for 2025, which focus on enhancing the position and competitiveness of Bahrainis in the private sector, equipping Bahrainis with suitable skills for career development in the private sector, and prioritising enterprise growth, digitisation, and sustainability.
“This collaboration reflects our unwavering commitment to empowering Bahrain’s startup ecosystem and supporting the industrial sector,” said Ms Mofeez. “By fostering innovation and building sustainable solutions, this programme contributes significantly to economic growth.”
Mr Al Baqali echoed Ms Mofeez’s sentiments, highlighting Alba’s dedication to nurturing Bahraini talent and economic growth. “Alba’s participation demonstrates our commitment to supporting local entrepreneurship,” he said. “By collaborating with innovative startups and SMEs, we not only enhance our operations but also empower the next generation of Bahraini leaders.”
Mr Haji praised Alba’s participation, calling it a testament to their strategic vision. “Together, we aim to develop solutions that enhance Alba’s operations, provide startups with a platform for growth, and address real-world industrial challenges,” he said.
A joint committee comprising representatives from Tamkeen, Brinc, and Alba will oversee the selection of startups and SMEs which will be tasked to develop and implement innovative solutions aimed at managing diverse data sources and enhancing asset reliability across Alba’s operations.
Key areas of focus include reducing downtime and associated costs through the application of advanced technologies such as predictive maintenance using AI and real-time monitoring with IoT sensors.
Bahrain-based startups and SMEs with industry-specific technological solutions are invited to apply. Applications can be submitted through the programme website: https://openinnovation.bh.
Selected participants will benefit from a six-month programme offering tailored support and mentorship to help them develop and implement their solutions effectively.
