Raising awareness about a group of blood cancers

TODAY is World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD), an event held on September 15 every year – during Blood Cancer Awareness Month – to raise awareness of lymphoma around the globe.

Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) medical oncology and haemato oncology consultant Dr Venkatesh Mushini provides a further insight into this condition and explains: “Lymphomas are a diverse group of blood cancers that originate in the lymphatic system, a crucial part of the immune system. They can vary significantly in terms of aggressiveness and treatment response.”

“Hodgkin lymphoma is characterised by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells and tends to have a more predictable pattern of spread and a better prognosis, while non-Hodgkin lymphoma encompasses a wide variety of subtypes and can vary significantly in terms of aggressiveness and treatment response,” said Dr Mushini. “Both types can present with similar symptoms, such as swollen lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss and fatigue.

“Diagnosis involves a thorough clinical evaluation, imaging studies and biopsy of affected lymph nodes or tissues to confirm the presence of malignant lymphocytes.

“Staging is essential to determine the appropriate treatment plan, which may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapy.”

“With advancements in medical research, the understanding of lymphomas has improved significantly, leading to better diagnostic techniques and treatment options. Innovative therapies, such as CAR T-cell therapy, offer hope for improved survival rates and quality of life for patients with lymphomas,” he said elaborating on lymphomas.

“Lymphomas are complex diseases that require a multidisciplinary approach for management. Ongoing research and clinical trials continue to explore new treatments and strategies, offering hope for improved outcomes.

“By enhancing awareness and understanding of lymphomas, patients and healthcare providers can work together more effectively to navigate the challenges posed by these cancers,” added Dr Mushini.
