DEMAND is rising fast for power and water in Kuwait pushing the country towards an ambitious public-private partnership strategy to increase capacity. The battle to keep the lights on and the air conditioners running is no easy task in Kuwait. The gap between installed power and water generating capacity and demand is tight which is particularly problematic in the summer. Kuwait s electricity needs have risen at an annual rate of about 7 per cent which has put pressure on its power and water ministry to build more plants. The ministry expects Kuwait s peak power demand to almost double to 22 500 megawatts (MW) by 2020 from 12 060 MW last summer. It is a similar story for water with demand expected to rise to 3.25 billion litres per day in 2020 from 2.02 billion litres last year. As a result Kuwait plans to add 11 300 MW of power and 2 billion litres of water capacity over the next seven years even after decommissioning parts of its fleet of a...

GE and REP Holding (REPH) a Russian power engineering company have signed a contract to assemble an additional 28 GE MS 5002E gas turbines at REPH s Nevsky Zavod manufacturing facilities. The deal is the third to be covered under a technology transfer and licensing agreement signed by GE Oil & Gas and REPH in March 2008. A contract for the assembly of the first 19 units was signed in 2008 and a second contract for 10 units was signed last year. The technology transfer and licensing agreement which calls for the assembly of Ladoga 32 gas compressor units based on MS 5002E gas turbines in Russia supports REPH s plans to sell the Ladoga gas turbine technology in the country. Our agreement with GE underscores the importance of using highly efficient and proven technologies in the modernisation of Russia s energy infrastructure says Igor Starinkov president of REPH. THE need to lower carbon emissions is having a major impact on the power generation sector worldwide. New regulatory frameworks and changes in end-users consumption are driving the development and deployment of new low emission technologies. With many competing technologies now available as well as increasing energy price volatility and more complex regulatory requirements it is difficult for investors to make informed decisions and for corporate to set up robust investment plans. To aid the decision making process A T Kearney has developed the Energy Transition Model (ETM) which brings together extensive data collected over many years of working in the sector and which allows users to try out different scenarios of prices regulations technology costs and infrastructure build up to 30 years into the future. THE new generation of Siemens gas turbines has cracked the US market. The utility company NextEra ordered six of the world record-setting gas turbines for the modernisation of combined-cycle power plants in Florida. Beginning in 2013 the turbines will reduce natural gas consumption at the power plants cutting emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by more than 50 per cent in the process. NextEra will save approximately 1 billion in operating and maintenance costs over the life of the turbines. When operated in a combined cycle with a steam turbine the new gas turbine has a world-record efficiency rating of 60 per cent. This represents a huge leap in efficiency in the US where the average efficiency rating of fossil-fired power plants is barely 30 per cent with even that of combined-cycle power plants below 40 per cent. If all of the combined-cycle power plants were to use the high-efficiency Siemens turbine they would generate nearly 350 more terawatt-hours pe...

ORCA Offshore is a range of fresh water generators that use vacuum distillation to convert up to 70 tonnes of sea water into potable water per day. Developed by Alfa Laval specifically for use offshore the Orca range is constructed from titanium and other corrosion-resistant materials to a simple design that ensures a long working life and low operating and maintenance costs. The core of the equipment is a plate heat exchanger with titanium plates that acts as both an evaporator and a condenser. Thanks to its corrosion resistance Titanium is the ideal material for seawater desalination systems and compared to a shell and tube exchanger with its greater surface area and welding the compact and light weight Orca plate heat exchanger represents a distinctly less expensive proposition. Over the years Alfa Laval has built a market leading position in plate technology and its application to desalination processes. Much of the world s merchant fleet uses Alfa Laval desal...

WEG has received an order from Rolls Royce Power Engineering for the supply of 11 31 250-KVA 4-pole 1120-frame generators for use on to two of the world s largest oil platforms -- Petrobras 51 and 52 (P51 and P52). The WEG generators will be coupled to RB-211 Rolls-Royce turbines the same type of engines used on Boeing 747 jumbo jets the company has said. The package of the 31 250KVA (13 800vo1t) WEG generators and natural gas-driven RB-211 engines provide each of the Petrobras floating platform units (FPU) with a cost-effective power-generation system that delivers high efficiency and offers considerable space saving and an unmatched power to weight ratio claimed the company. In addition to supplying its RB 211 turbines Rolls Royce is also contracted to supply all integration and installation engineering for the power generation systems on both P51 and P52 floating platforms. P51 the latest of the two rigs is set to operate off the Rio de Janeiro state coa...

By adopting a new approach to the application of temporary power systems companies can make a major impact on project profitability. Specifically they can bring about increased production levels generate additional revenue and improve cash flow. Other benefits include reductions in the risk of lost production in capital expenditure and in total project costs. In today s market there is enormous commercial pressure to produce oil at the earliest opportunity to improve project cash flow and project profitability. To enable this the conversion of existing vessels and refurbishment of early production facilities is increasing. Temporary power systems are well suited to powering these applications during both the fabrication and refurbishment phases. They also provide the facility with power while it is operating. Typical applications for early production include amongst many others power for surface facilities down-hole pumps and water injection units. ...
