R&D in steel: Enabling a digital advantage

While the R&D function plays a central role in enabling innovation typical R&D budgets are only a small percentage of revenue. Accenture s Dr. Andrew Zoryk says digital technologies can help steel companies gain a competitive advantage. Along with cost reduction and customer service steel companies are focused on product innovation to a greater or lesser extent as one of the three core elements of their business strategy. While the research and development (R&D) function plays a central role in enabling this third strategic pillar typical R&D budgets are only 0.5 to 1.0 per cent of revenue1 in many companies. Squeezing the maximum return out of such limited budgets is crucial. At a macro level the more commodity-oriented steel producers are investing in targeted innovations to increase their product ranges in selected areas. Thus they re encroaching into the markets of diversified steel players. On the oppo...

Creating durable seals in glass-lined steel equipment

A newly developed gasket tape made of expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE) that Bob Gore discovered back in 1969 is specifically designed to address the challenges of creating reliable seals in large glass-lined steel equipment Equipment made of glass-lined steel is used when manufacturing or processing aggressive chemicals such as aniline derivatives and sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. The Achilles heel of such systems is the gaskets needed to seal the joints between components. Exposure to aggressive media causes the seals to degrade overtime resulting in damage to equipment and posing a health risk to operators. Replacing the seals costs a great deal of time and effort with a corresponding drop in production output. Advanced steel plates for sour and wet H2S service

MATERIAL failure linked to sulphides is a major issue in upstream oil and gas as well as in refining and petrochemistry for over half a century and is a likely risk in future exploitation as the hydrocarbon resources tend to become more corrosive. Borouge extends lifetime of steel pipelines in Middle East

BOROUGE a leading provider of innovative value creating plastics solutions showed how it is contributing to the oil and gas industry in the Middle East helping them extend the lifetime of their steel pipelines by internally lining them with durable corrosion resistant polyethylene at the Arabplast exhibition held in Dubai in UAE. Internal corrosion of steel pipelines is a major hazard to oil and gas companies due to the high level of environmental costs and implications of spillage of oil or contaminated water. Regular replacement of the pipelines leads to high costs for the operator. Companies such as Kuwait Oil Corporation (KOC) which is suffering from an increasing presence of hydrogen sulphide are seeking solutions to internal corrosion. One option is to use close-fit internal lining of polyethylene pipes which will significantly extend the life of the original pipeline. This is equally true for flow lines and water injection lines which could be inte...

Internal chemical cleaning of steel pipelines

The In-Situ cleaning process for new and old often corroded pipe lines should be started with a thorough inspection of the pipe line: The internal diameter of the pipe line has to be checked and samples of rust and debris have to be collected to confirm that the cleaning operation will give the desired results. Because the total cleaning procedure will consist of a number of pig runs a lot of information can be collected about the vertical head and elevation profile of the pipe line which knowledge is of great importance for the final coating operation. Besides that it is critical it is very important that all pig trains containing water chemical liquids and drying liquids are being launched solid travel solid and are being received solid in order to clean the pipe line with success. Any condition that might impose a significant under pressure in any liquid train can cause air intrusion resulting in inadequate surface preparation and transfer of liquids to a position...

Steel output to rise 22.6pc

Sabic plans to raise its steel output by 22.6 per cent to 6.5 million tonnes by 2010. By 2010 we will be done with our last expansion plan which will add another one million tonnes of steel Hisham Al Hmili general manager for steel products sales and marketing at Sabic s metal group said. Hadeed the largest GCC steel producer would have capacity of 5.5 million tonnes by the end of the year up from 5.3 million tonnes now Al Hmili said. The increased capacity at steel subsidiary would be used to supply the domestic construction market of which Sabic currently has a 53 per cent share. A construction boom in the Gulf fuelled by increased revenue from oil exports is encouraging more steel producers to build steel plants in the region where more than 1 trillion is earmarked for infrastructure projects. However Sabic has decided against taking part in a 1.5 billion Mauritania iron project because returns would be too low. Meanwhile Sabic s strategic busines...

Resistance welded steel pipe sees

It is now well known in the Gulf that Dammam-based Saudi Steel Pipe had commissioned a state-of-the- art HFI (high frequency induction) welded steel pipe mill in October of 2000 and won the API monogram in January of 2001. A few months later came the Aramco approval and then approvals from Hunt Oil Dove Energy ABV Rock and TotalFinaElf. SSP s success over the past several months came not by chance but by a virtue of a well thought out plan. It would first invest in the very best technologies available in the market to design their plant around and then systematically educate the marketplace relative to their evolved version of resistance welded steel pipe. In many quarters of the oil and gas industry a bias exists against Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) pipe. This bias is often reflected in an across-the-board rejection of ERW steel pipe for application in sizes less than 16 and it is not until pipe diameters go beyond the limits of s...
