Creating durable seals in glass-lined steel equipment

A newly developed gasket tape made of expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE) that Bob Gore discovered back in 1969 is specifically designed to address the challenges of creating reliable seals in large glass-lined steel equipment Equipment made of glass-lined steel is used when manufacturing or processing aggressive chemicals such as aniline derivatives and sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. The Achilles heel of such systems is the gaskets needed to seal the joints between components. Exposure to aggressive media causes the seals to degrade overtime resulting in damage to equipment and posing a health risk to operators. Replacing the seals costs a great deal of time and effort with a corresponding drop in production output. Böhler filler metals in core equipment of petchem sector

HIGH temperature resistant and Hydrogen resisting CrMo (V) steels have been around for a very long time and have found use with great success for applications in the petrochemical respectively in the power generation industry. Typical products for these industries are heaters heat exchangers reactors and hydrocrackers usually build as heavy wall pressure vessels (up to 350 mm wall thickness). In a continuous strive for optimising the economics in the various process installations in these industries the service pressures and/or temperatures have increased. This implied that the respective base materials either had to be made available in heavier thicknesses or they had to be developed to meet higher strength and impact toughness requirements. Increased mechanical properties will reduce or at least restrict the necessary wall thickness which generates an additional economical advantage in production handling and installation of heavy process ...

Equipment boon for study group

Work by the CSIRO Minerals team in Australia to analyse oil rig wastewaters has demonstrated the robustness of Malvern s Mastersizer design and the breadth of applications for which this family of particle size analyzers can be used. The work was carried out on a platform 130 km out at sea using a Mastersizer which had been transported directly to the site. Despite the rigours of transportation alignment of the unit had barely changed and it was ready for use in a matter of minutes. The Mastersizer was used to perform particle analysis on waste waters to help identify the most effective treatment before disposal. Analysis had to be conducted on site as the samples contained oil droplets that coalesced or creamed out within minutes which would change the nature of the sample irreversibly. In a very different environment the CSIRO Minerals team transported the Mastersizer to an alumina refinery to analyse highly caustic liquor samples. As the caustic na...
