The world added more than 260 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity last year, exceeding expansion in 2019 by close to 50 per cent, according to data released today by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).
Global renewable energy capacity additions in 2020 beat earlier estimates and all previous records despite the economic slowdown that resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Emirates news agency WAM.
Irena’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2021 shows that renewable energy’s share of all new generating capacity rose considerably for the second year in a row. More than 80 per cent of all new electricity capacity added last year was renewable, with solar and wind accounting for 91 per cent of new renewables.

The transaction is a continuation of Nebras s strategy to enhance its asset base through attractive opportunities and expand its presence in the Omani power market said a statement. Sri Lanka-based JLanka International, a premier solar and renewable energy technology solutions provider, has announced an investment of up to $10 million within the coming five years in Bahrain’s renewable energy sector.
Commencing operations in Bahrain, JLanka has been commissioned by the kingdom’s Sustainable Energy Unit (SEU) under the supervision of Dr Abdul Hussain Bin Ali Mirza, Minister of Electricity and Water, to conduct an exclusive training programme in Bahrain to educate and certify solar PV contractors and consultants as well as training EWA personnel on grid connection standards, said a statement from the company.

The project, which will come up on 12 hectares of land at Al Dour in the Southern Region of Bahrain, is being built at a cost of around BD6.5 million ($17.1 million).
The plant will produce 3 MW of solar energy and 2 MW of wind energy, reported BNA.
The project comes in line with the National Renewable Energy Plan approved by the government to achieve five percent of the total renewable energy consumption in Bahrain by 2025, it stated, citing the country's Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza.

THE World Future Energy Summit has done it again. Not only has it achieved prominence in the financial, energy, government and construction sectors, it has scored top accolades at the prestigious ‘event awards’ held in London, September 26, 2008.
The awards claimed were the ‘Best International Event’ and ‘Best Launch Exhibition’, beating off stiff competition from Gastech and Live Earth, and Business Travel Show Dubai, respectively.
