Mercedes-Benz showcases electric cars at roadshow

Bahrain is motoring ahead on the green front with mighty Mercedes-Benz witnessing half the electric cars being bought in the kingdom brandishing the marque s iconic three-point star. During a one-of-a-kind Mercedes-Benz EQ Roadshow yesterday at the Reef Club House the German company s sole authorised general distributor in the kingdom Al Haddad Motors highlighted how consumer safety and convenience were proving to be a winning formula. Mercedes-Benz is renowned for its powerful and dynamic driving performance and its all-electric lineup is no exception. Acceleration in an electric Mercedes-Benz is instant and seamless delivering impressive torque while producing zero tailpipe emissions. We are currently the leaders in the market having sold more than half the electric cars in Bahrain according to the reports we receive from the Traffic Directorate primarily because of the wide range of models we have Al Haddad group sales manager David Lord told the GDN. The roadshow which included test drives around Reef Island for Al Haddad partners and motoring correspondents was aimed at helping address any hesitancy in the mindset of potential electric vehicle (EV) owners according to Al Haddad chief executive Warren Hudson. He added that many visitors to the showroom express concern around the availability of charging stations as well as the range of EVs before they need to be recharged. In Bahrain especially people do not realistically do the mileage where they need to be concerned about charging stations he explained. Of course we install a home charging station at no additional cost whenever customers buy our EQ vehicles and personally I only need to use it once every eight days or so. But of course there is nothing better than sitting feeling and experiencing an EV in person which is why we organised the roadshow with more events like this planned in the future. Currently there are six models within the EQ range available at the company s showroom in Tubli. These include the EQA SUV EQB SUV EQE Sedan EQE SUV EQS Sedan and EQS SUV. According to Al Haddad electric vehicle specialist Hussain Nader the G-Class-inspired EQG is also set to join the lineup soon hopefully by the end of the year. During yesterday s roadshow the GDN team tested out the EQS 450 sedan and the EQE 350 SUV. The EQS 450 sedan is the perfect daily driver with a range of 630 to 780 kilometres while packing a moderate punch under the hood as well with 360hp and a 0-100 acceleration in 6.2 seconds. With a luxurious interior the EQE 350 crossover SUV is particularly popular with families and has a range of 550 to 650 kilometres. Also available during yesterday s test drive were the EQA 250 EQB 350 EQE350 4MATIC and EQS 450 SUV. All of the cars come with a five-year vehicle warranty and 10-year or 250 000km battery warranty. During vehicle information sessions Al Haddad team members highlighted various strategic decisions to make EV ownership even more convenient and comfortable including a bevy of sensors to prevent the cars from overheating or malfunctioning and batteries that can be fixed one module at a time as opposed to requiring an expensive full-battery replacement once the warranty period is complete. They also noted that the company has been working with stakeholders around the kingdom to facilitate the transition to EVs by helping install more public charging stations as well as providing guidance to Civil Defence personnel about how to respond in the rare case that an EV breaks down. Since EVs cannot be pushed or towed like conventional petroleum-fuelled vehicles a specialised tow service would be deployed. Owing to their deep industry knowledge and significant market presence the team is eager to see a stronger EV charging station presence in the kingdom. In the last three years Bahrain has been adopting policies to encourage the use of EVs. Last year the Electricity and Water Affairs announced plans to build five fast charging stations in the kingdom to be operational this year. Currently there are two superfast chargers located in the kingdom which can charge EVs from 20 to 80 per cent in 15 minutes. These can be found at Atrium Mall and Wadi Al Sail gas station. In addition chargers can be found at Moda Mall City Centre Almoayyed Tower King Hamad American Mission Hospital and AVIS car rental in Seef as well as Al Haddad s showroom and service centre locations. The GDN has previously reported that plans were underway to install even more new electric car charging stations across the kingdom catering to the 112 electric vehicles already registered at the General Traffic Directorate in Bahrain.
