Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has named one of its vessels “ESL Khor Fakkan” in recognition of the strategic importance of the coastal city of Khor Fakkan and its port.
ESL said the choice of the name reflects its long-standing relationship with Khor Fakkan Port, dating back to March 2019, when the port welcomed the maiden call of the company’s flagship Galex (GLX) service. Since then, Khor Fakkan has continued to play a pivotal role within ESL’s shipping network.
The naming comes at a time of rapid development at Khor Fakkan Port, further strengthening its position on the regional and international trade and logistics map. Its strategic location on the east coast of the Emirate of Sharjah, coupled with its ability to accommodate and handle large vessels with substantial cargo capacities, continues to reinforce its importance to global shipping, a release said.
A key hub on global trade routes
Khor Fakkan Port has recorded a number of significant operational milestones in recent months, reflecting the continued development of its capabilities and the readiness of its infrastructure.
In July 2026, the port welcomed the ultra-large container vessel MSC Loreto, with a capacity of 24,232 TEUs and a length of approximately 400 metres, underscoring its ability to accommodate and handle some of the world’s largest container ships.
In August, the port received BYD Changsha, carrying 6,068 new energy vehicles from China on a direct shipping route.
These milestones highlight Khor Fakkan Port’s growing role in regional trade flows and supply chains, as well as the breadth of its capabilities in handling both containers and vehicles. Together, they further strengthen its position as a maritime and logistics hub connecting global trade routes with markets across the region.
Innovative logistics solutions
Against this backdrop, Emirates Shipping Line has leveraged Khor Fakkan Port’s strategic location to provide alternative logistics options, including the discharge of cargo at the port followed by overland transportation to its final destinations.
These alternative land bridge solutions support the continuity of cargo flows and maintain connectivity with major ports and inland locations across the Gulf, further demonstrating the importance of Khor Fakkan’s strategic location and its role in enhancing supply chain resilience and supporting regional trade.
According to ESL, the naming of “ESL Khor Fakkan” honours the legacy of Khor Fakkan Port and its contribution to regional trade.
