Dubai’s massive expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport has moved forward with the award of a major contract for an Automated People Mover (APM) system that will connect key areas of the new airport as part of its first phase of development.
A consortium of India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has secured the order to design and build the APM system for Phase 1 of the airport, which is being developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects.
The automated transport system will form part of the infrastructure being developed at Al Maktoum International as Dubai builds out what is planned to become the world’s largest airport.
Once fully developed, the airport at Dubai World Central is expected to handle 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight a year, significantly expanding Dubai’s aviation capacity and supporting its longer-term position as a global passenger and logistics hub.
The L&T-MHI consortium will deliver the APM system on a turnkey basis, covering design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness.
Under the Design-and-Build contract, L&T will be responsible for the design, procurement, delivery and integration of key infrastructure and systems, including APM guideways, traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communications, platform screen doors and depot equipment.
The project involves multiple interfaces between the rail system, power supply, telecommunications and other airport infrastructure, making the APM an important component of the airport’s integrated transportation system.
“With challenging execution milestones, advanced technologies and multiple system interfaces ... this project exemplifies the scale and complexity of integrated APM Rail Systems,” said Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T.
The consortium combines MHI’s experience in automated people mover systems with L&T’s capabilities in integrated rail and metro infrastructure.
The award comes as Dubai advances the multi-phase development of Al Maktoum International, a project that is expected to reshape the emirate’s aviation infrastructure over the coming decades.
The airport expansion is central to Dubai’s plans to accommodate future growth in passenger and cargo traffic, while creating an aviation hub capable of supporting the emirate’s wider economic and logistics ambitions. - TradeArabia News Service
