Attacks disrupt East-West pipeline, cut oil output, says Saudi Arabia

OIL AND GAS NEWS

Attacks on Saudi energy facilities have cut the kingdom's oil production capacity by around 600,000 barrels per day and throughput on its East-West Pipeline by about 700,000 bpd, Saudi Press Agency reported, citing an official source ‌at the Ministry of Energy.

The attacks resulted in the death of a Saudi citizen working in industrial security at the Saudi Energy Company, while seven others were injured. Several key operational processes across the energy system were also disrupted.

Important energy facilities in the Kingdom have recently been subjected to multiple attacks, including oil and gas production, transportation, and refining facilities, as well as petrochemical facilities and the electricity sector in Riyadh, the Eastern Province, and Yanbu Industrial City, it said.

Among the affected facilities was a pumping station on the critical East-West pipeline, leading to the loss of around 700,000 barrels per day in throughput. The pipeline is a key route for supplying global markets during the current period.

The Manifa production facility was also targeted, reducing its output by approximately 300,000 barrels per day. A previous attack on the Khurais facility caused a similar decline of 300,000 barrels per day, bringing the Kingdom’s total production capacity loss to around 600,000 barrels per day.

The attacks also extended to major refining facilities, including SATORP in Jubail, Ras Tanura refinery, SAMREF refinery in Yanbu, and Riyadh refinery, directly affecting exports of refined products to global markets. Processing facilities in Ju’aymah were also affected by fires, impacting exports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas liquids.

The continuation of these attacks leads to reduced supply and slows recovery, thereby affecting the security of supply for consuming countries and contributing to increased volatility in oil markets.
