Bahrain has just clinched its first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women's 10,000-metre race event with Kalkidan Gezahegne, 30, winning the silver medal just behind Gold medal winner Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands who clocked 29:55.32.

Gezahegne, 30, finished ahead of Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia. Her time of 29 minutes 56.18 seconds was less than a second behind Hassan and more than five seconds ahead of Gidey, who set the world record in June.

Gezahegne increased her pace in the closing stages to grab the silver medal with Gidey picking up the bronze medal after leading the race from the seventh lap.

Dutchwoman Hassan secured a second title and third medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, showing her blistering pace down the home straight to win the women's 10,000m.

The 28-year-old Ethiopian-born Hassan, world champion over 1,500m and 10,000m, won the 5,000m title and picked up bronze in the 1,500m in her bid for an unprecedented triple in Tokyo.
