Bahrain launches tender for soil-less farming projects

Bahrain has floated a tender for setting up two soil-less farming projects - one at Diraz over a 18,000 sq m area and another at Hurat A'ali on a 24,000 sq m area - in bid to boost local vegetables production.
Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf has begun the implementation of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s Initiative for Food Security with the launch of the tender, reported BNA.
The minister said the project financial preparations has been done for 36 months, including its operation period for two years.
Agriculture and Marine Resources Undersecretary Dr Nabeel Mohammed Abu Al Fateh pointed out that the project was aimed at supporting Bahraini youth keen to work in the field of agricultural production and adopt innovative technologies for sustainable production.
He said the project is being implemented in phases - with the Diraz and Hurat Aali project in Phase One, while six other sites will be distributed over the four governorates in the other phases.
Once all the phases get launched, the local vegetables production is expected to increase by 20%, he added.
