Hospital celebrates 500th baby

INNOCENT cooing and giggles filled the air at one of Bahrain’s renowned hospitals yesterday as it celebrated its latest milestone of delivering its 500th baby.

KIMSHEALTH Hospital in Umm Al Hassam held a ceremony at its auditorium to mark the accomplishment.

“On this happy occasion, I would like to thank our dedicated team, as well as the parents who put their faith in us,” group executive director – operations and projects (GCC) Jacob Thomas told the GDN.

“We hold on to our pillar – ethics – and are committed to our patients’ safety and offering the highest quality care,” he added.

“When I came to the hospital I was really scared as my regular doctor wasn’t available. But the on-duty doctor calmed my fears and made me comfortable even though I wasn’t familiar with her,” said Pakistani expatriate Mariam Kashif, mother of the 500th baby delivered at the facility.

“They treated me as a family member and encouraged me to go for a normal delivery without epidural, and within two hours of labour my daughter Mirha came into this world,” added the 40-year-old freelance writer for Urdu publications.

Her husband, Kashif Saleem, aged 44, is a businessman and the Adliya residents have six children, including Mirha.

Present at the celebration were the hospital’s dynamic team of doctors, nurses and midwives as well as the parents and their babies who, over the last three-and-a-half years, have become part of the journey.

“My wife and I came to the hospital on March 25, 2021 in the afternoon and around 12am on March 26 Steev was born,” said Indian expatriate Sanju Mathew, father of the first normal-delivery baby at the hospital.

“It was a long process but throughout it everyone took good care of (wife) Sumitha. The nurses were with her all the while. I was also present during the process and it was assuring to see so many doctors and nurses present,” added the 38-year-old finance professional and Tubli resident.

In Bahrain, the medical practice mandates a paediatrician to be present during a caesarean (surgical) delivery, but at KIMSHEALTH Hospital, a paediatrician accompanies other medical staff during normal deliveries as well, according to senior paediatrician Dr Sajeev BK.

The celebration featured a cake-cutting ceremony and some parents shared their positive experiences, from receiving emotional support to premium care for both, mother and baby.

Parents who attended the ceremony were gifted a ‘Little Citizens’ card, launched by KIMSHEALTH Hospital earlier this month, It provides a range of benefits, including discounts for various services, to babies born at the facility, and is valid for three years from birth.

The hospital also organises monthly antenatal programmes, open to any expectant parent in Bahrain free of cost.

“Parents can benefit from educational talks by diverse experts, including breastfeeding consultants, labour nurses, midwives, gynaecologists, neonatologists, and paediatricians who impart knowledge and assure parents that delivery is normal thing,” Mr Thomas added.
