HEALTH MATTERS: A specialist general surgeon: Your partner in breast cancer care

October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

Early detection is extremely important to determine the available treatment options, and the role of healthcare professionals in combating this disease.

“Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue grow abnormally and divide uncontrollably, harming the nearby normal cells,” explains King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH), A’ali, specialist general surgeon Dr Layla Hasan.

“Breast cancer is invasive, meaning the cancer cells have extended beyond the normal breast tissue damaging the normal function of breast cells.”

A specialist general surgeon is a medical professional who specialises in performing surgery on various parts of the body. In the context of breast cancer, they play a pivotal role in diagnosing, treating, and managing the disease. Surgeons can perform procedures such as biopsies to determine if a lump or mass in the breast is cancerous.

For patients with breast cancer, surgeons may perform surgeries like lumpectomy or mastectomy.

After breast removal, surgeons can perform reconstructive surgeries to help restore the shape and appearance of the breast.

Dr Hasan has helped countless patients navigate their breast cancer journey and emphasises the importance of early detection.

“Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer. Regular mammograms and clinical breast exams are crucial for identifying potential issues at an early stage and even the precancerous stage when the breast tissue is just starting to appear abnormal but has not damaged the surrounding cells,” she said.

She also highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, involving a team of specialists, to provide the best possible care.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate ourselves about this disease and take proactive steps to protect our health. By understanding the role of specialist general surgeons and the importance of early detection, we can empower ourselves to make informed decisions about our breast health,” Dr Hasan continues.

“With the current advanced treatments, the majority of breast cancer diagnoses are treatable and if detected at early stages, the better the chances for cure.”

In addition to surgery, breast cancer treatment may involve other modalities, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy.

Coping with a breast cancer diagnosis can be emotionally challenging.

It’s essential to have a strong support system, including family, friends and healthcare professionals.

Support groups can also provide valuable connections with others who have experienced similar situations.

Together, we can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

By raising awareness, supporting research, and seeking early medical attention, we can help create a future where no-one has to face this disease alone.
